Mahin Sarkar, a candidate for DUCSU from a separate panel, expelled from NCP

National Citizens Party (NCP) leader Mahin Sarkar has been nominated for the post of General Secretary (GS) from an independent panel in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. The NCP has then expelled him from the party on charges of ‘serious breach of discipline’. The party says that the reason for this decision is that Mahin did not take permission from NCP convener Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhtar Hossain before announcing his candidacy.

On Monday afternoon, Mahin Sarkar announced his candidacy for the GS post of DUCSU central student union from an independent panel called ‘DU First’. The NCP announced Mahin’s expulsion in a press release around 11 pm. The press release sent by NCP Joint Member Secretary (Office) Salehuddin Sifat said that due to serious breach of party discipline, NCP Joint Member Secretary Mahin Sarkar has been expelled from his post and responsibilities on the orders of the convener and member secretary until further orders. The expulsion order will be effective from today (Monday) and will remain in effect until further notice.

Later, around 1 am, Salehuddin Sifat said in a message sent to journalists that Mahin Sarkar did not take permission from the party convener and member secretary before accepting the nomination in the DUCSU elections, which is considered a serious violation of party discipline.

Mahin Sarkar was the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement during the July mass uprising. The new student organization Democratic Student Parliament, formed at the initiative of a section of former coordinators, is fielding a panel called the ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Parliament’ in the DUCSU elections.

It has been learned that Mahin Sarkar wanted to run for a top position in the ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Parliament’ panel. Since there was no agreement on that, Mahin went to a separate panel. But the NCP has support for the anti-discrimination student parliament panel. Sources said that Mahin was expelled from the party on the grounds that if he runs for a top position in DUCSU, the votes of the anti-discrimination panel would be wasted.
